Compass acquires Momentum ESR to help streamline digital school management systems in NSW

Melbourne, Australia, March 29, 2021: Compass today announces it has acquired school administrative software solution Momentum ESR (ESR) for an undisclosed amount.

Founded 18 years ago, ESR is used by more than 100 NSW public schools. ESR was the first online student report card solution within NSW public education, available from 2003, followed by ESR Welfare in 2006. In 2010, ESR evolved into Momentum ESR and was one of the first reporting, attendance, and welfare solutions to be delivered as a cloud-based solution to NSW public schools.

“We are excited to welcome ESR to the Compass team, enabling us to continue expanding our range of solutions available to schools in NSW. Acquiring ESR will enable us to continue innovating and evolving school management software offerings, supported by a team of more than 160 employees, in a comprehensive K-12 solution,” Compass CEO and co-founder John de la Motte said.

“Compass has developed a highly-scalable deployment model with capability to rapidly onboard new schools. This strategic acquisition adds talent, knowhow and enables us to expand market share in key geographies like NSW.”

ESR’s team will join Compass Group and its existing schools will continue to use the ESR platform with the added benefits of the Compass platform and a local customer support team. Compass now employs 160+ staff across Australia, The UK, Ireland and Canada.

ESR co-founder Aaron Hughes will join Compass as NSW State Manager. Commenting on the news, Hughes said: “Compass, as an Australian company, offering the most comprehensive range of functionality and support, was an easy choice for us when deciding how best to evolve ESR and support NSW schools into the future.”

Compass, which is used by more than 1800 schools and 2 million parents, teachers and students, was named the chosen school management software provider by the Catholic Education System in NSW, was the first education platform provider to pass Western Australia’s stringent school privacy and data protection regulations, and has recently expanded into Ireland, the UK and Canada.

The increasing strain on Australia’s education system - where the number of schools has remained relatively flat at a time when student populations are increasing by about 1.6% year-on-year means there is an increasing need for educators to streamline and automate existing workflows to ensure the right level of care and consideration can continue to be afforded to the expanding number of students on each campus.

By integrating ESR with the Compass platform, more schools will benefit from a raft of modules including parent communication, portals and payments, attendance kiosk services, parent interview management, end-to-end student information management and reporting solutions. Compass schools will also benefit from a range of additional functionality so that they can comprehensively manage a school’s planning, curriculum, administrative, finance, professional development, reporting and planning data needs. The platform also provides schools with seamless integration to NSW Department of Education systems.
